New Gallery for David Zwirner Opens in Chelsea

Selldorf Architects, February 20, 2013

The new Selldorf-designed David Zwirner, 20th Street opened February 15th in Chelsea with an exhibition of works by Dan Flavin and Donald Judd. The 30,000 sf building is entirely new construction and will mark an environmental milestone as the first LEED certified commercial gallery in the U.S. On the exterior, a façade made from exposed, board-formed concrete resonates with the industrial character of the neighborhood. Intended to function as a secondary space for the gallery’s estate artists, the design has two distinct public galleries. On the ground floor, the 5,000 sf main exhibition space has concrete floors and large sawtooth skylights; while a second 2,000 sf space on the level above has more intimate proportions and white oak floors.
