Collector’s Townhouse

This residence is located along a historic street in Greenwich Village that originally served as a private carriageway for houses on Washington Square, and has been home to artists Isamu Noguchi, Jackson Pollock, and Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney.
The main living spaces are organized around a new open, sculptural staircase with concrete risers and blackened metal railing that brings natural light to all levels of the house. The main floor contains a gracious, double-height living room that receives abundant daylight through its ten-foot tall, south facing windows. A focal point of this room is an 18th-century gilt wood and zinc Karl Friedrich Schinkel chandelier.
The entry level includes the dining room and kitchen with access to a new garden patio. A glass entry vestibule was added to define space in the otherwise open layout. The master bedroom is found on the upper floor, adjacent to a new roof garden terrace. Interior design harmoniously incorporates Selldorf’s custom Vica furniture with the client’s period furnishings and collection of paintings, drawings and objects.
