“Calder: Constellations,” part of a two-stage exhibition showcasing distinct Constellation series of Alexander Calder and Joan Miró, was designed by Selldorf Architects and organized by Pace Gallery. Various strategies were deployed to produce spatial tranquility where Calder’s delicate and kinetic artwork could become the focal point of interest; The gallery’s spiral staircase was fully encased, adding much needed wall space and removing elements that might detract from the experience. Newly introduced walls and rooms enhanced the experience of the gallery as spectators moved between the various spaces physically and visually. In manipulating and exaggerating the range of heights and techniques at which the 36 sculptures were displayed, the artworks were not only in dialogue with the space and one another, but retained their individual identities.
